Andrew C. - OddJobber Spotlight
In our OddJobber Spotlights, we feature current or former OddJobbers who do exceptional work. Odd Jobs can be a personal endeavor. You want to know who is coming over to your house and who will be helping you out. OddJobber Spotlights serve to highlight the student behind the work they do.
OJ: How did you hear about OddJobbers?
AC: I think it was word of mouth. I had a friend tell me about this company that you could do these odd jobs for, make money, and it was really flexible and just for college kids. I had been doing gigs and Odd Jobs since I was a kid, things like doing yard work or demo for a neighbor. Stuff like that, I’ve been doing my whole life just to make extra cash. In college, I had these points where I’d had a few free weeks here and there or I had downtime and it’s always nice to have an option to make a few bucks. That’s just so nice.
OJ: What was your first job?
AC: I think I was bailing hay. I was a little underprepared because I had never done that before and it was really hard work, but the people liked me and invited me back for two or three more jobs. We kind of made a connection right there, and it was nice because I got more work out of it.
OJ: What has been your favorite Odd Job?
AC: The other day I was splitting logs for someone who had a hydraulic log splitter. I had done that a few times when I was a kid. You get to put a giant log in a machine and it chops it for you, instead of you having to do it with an axe. It was really fun and almost nostalgic to some extent.
OJ: What are the expenses you have that you’re working Odd Jobs for?
AC: I’ve hit that point where I want to be financially independent. Right now I just need to work to cover my rent and food, and not move back home. I just need to make ends meet and OddJobbers has been super helpful. I’ve been earning what I need and not dwindling my savings down.
OJ: So you're an engineer. What make you go into that major during school?
AC: I would say I wanted to do engineering because I was pretty problem solving oriented. My high school had really good math and science programs, so I just sort-of gravitated towards that area. I was pretty good at it because I invested the time and worked hard at it. When I reached college I thought, well if this is what engineering is, then that’s what I want to do.
OJ: What is your plan now that you've graduated?
AC: I’ve applied to certain full-time positions. OddJobbers has given me the flexibility to not run around and accept the first offer that comes through the door. I’ve been making great money and am able to pay all my bills and everything with just OddJobbers alone that I don’t have to stress out. I can play my cards and be a little bit picky waiting for a job that really sticks out to me.
OJ: Will you stay in Spokane or are you looking in other cities?
AC: The places I’m looking at are Spokane, Bend, Reno, Boulder, and kind of a wild-card city which could be anywhere that piques my interest - could be anything from Bozeman or Honolulu if the job is right. I think it would be really cool to just pack up everything and go live in a totally new city for a few years. There's a lot of cities that seem really fun like Austin, Texas or San Diego, so I like to have a wild-option open.
OJ: What is your favorite place to eat in Spokane?
AC: There's used to be a restaurant downtown called Fire that used to sell pizza and sushi, and they were both amazing. It was sweet. You could get a pizza for 2 or 3 people, a few sushi rolls, and a little sake and it was just so good. It was a weird combo, but it was so good. You just don’t see that very often.
